A Pair of Cuba-Destined Aid Sailboats Listed Unaccounted For following Setting Sail from the Coast of Mexico.
A extensive search and recovery operation is currently under way in the Caribbean region for a pair of missing sailing vessels carrying aid cargo journeying from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.
Naval Rescue Missions Launched
Mexico has sent naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to find the two vessels, which were transporting no fewer than nine sailors, per a official statement.
The ships had been scheduled to make landfall in Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their docking, the navy said.
Background of Relief to the Nation
The island nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the island struggles through multiple nationwide blackouts.
"Both skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and each boat are fitted with appropriate safety equipment and signalling equipment," a representative associated with the mission stated.
The nine-person crew are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their embassy officials.
"Our team is collaborating completely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.
Previous Humanitarian Shipment
Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and officially received another boat that had transported 14 tonnes of donated goods to the nation.
That boat, nicknamed "a new Granma" after the boat in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, drugs, baby formula, cycles and provisions.
Broader Geopolitical Climate
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led initiatives to ship essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the country was initiated.
The United Nations have since warned of ""critical" shortages of supplies, with over 50,000 operations postponed in Cuba amid power shortages.
Diplomatic measures have been ramped up over the past months, with remarks from several officials underscoring the complex state of relations.
Responding to previous statements, a high-ranking Cuban official insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Indications suggest that initial phases of negotiations were initiated, although their present status remains not publicly known.
The naval forces said it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its command to find the sailboats and secure the security of the crews.
To date, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
