Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
