Arsenal's manager has expressed confidence that his squad can continue to cope with fitness issues following revealing that forward Kai Havertz is not ready for the coming weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

The German forward has been sidelined since the summer after undergoing knee surgery. Hoped to return at the start of this month, the manager stated the player encountered a problem when increasing his recovery and failed to reach “the next phase.”

“Our experience helped us build a group that is considerably steadier and has more options,” commented Arteta.

Tactical Decisions for Brentford Clash

This news presents a selection headache for Wednesday’s match against Brentford. Arteta must choose between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who got a goal playing out of position against Chelsea, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly after a fitness issue off the bench. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is also an option post-recovery.

Defensive Concerns Persist

More doubts surround defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who sat out the Chelsea match. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to keep their places in the heart of the defence for the league leaders.

Arteta feels the substantial investment on new players in the last transfer window has resulted in a far better place to navigate such setbacks.

Greater Options Key to Premier League Pursuit

When asked if increased squad depth was aiding their title quest, his response was positive. “Absolutely, because this season has presented greater challenges in certain positions, and now what’s happening with the backline,” he added.

“Our previous experiences taught us that we must deploy players in various roles, and they must be capable to adapt to new tasks if we are to fight at the top. And the example of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Frustrated Star

Commenting on the complication noted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave further detail. “His recovery was progressing. He could not go to the required step and now it’s looking like we have unlocked that.”

Arteta expressed his personal desire to have him back. “Everyone is eager to have him. I mean, Havertz is someone that, in my view, I value highly for what he brings to the team, but his character, his attitude. I observe his frustration being outside.”
