We are checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that depict the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location from which the images originated relied on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.
Locating additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
