Israelis observe two-year remembrance of October 7th attacks as Gaza ceasefire talks proceed
Israelis have gathered across the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.
The attack saw more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel responded by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our violent enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled state commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still took place across the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was televised throughout Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the proposal.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the talks said that an night meeting of mediated discussions began at evening in Egypt.
The official explained the morning session ended without concrete outcomes, amid differences over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.
He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet produce any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are working hard to narrow the differences between the conflicting groups.
Essential Issues in Discussions
- A permanent ceasefire
- The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance provision
- Post-war governance of the area
Civilian Reaction
In the city's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member survived the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were murdered and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until every captive come back not a single person will feel safe."
"Once we see everyone home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to heal," she added.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people gathered to show their solidarity for the relatives of the captives. Israel states 48 continue in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be living.
Protester Atalia Regev stated: "We must do every compromise necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."
Research now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the war to end in return for the liberation of the abducted.
Palestinian Conditions
At the site of the music event, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From there, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the heavy Israeli attacks continued.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and locality areas and in the eastern district of the community, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"Once the evening comes, the dread arrives with it," relocated urban resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing previously, described.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who places his head on me all night."
"Constantly we look at the updates to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the fighting will return to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The medical facility in the urban area reported it had taken in the remains of half dozen people by the afternoon, including a trio who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern district.
Another medical facility in the south region of the city reported another two victims had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while seeking aid to the south region, health workers said.
