Throughout his initial presidency, analysts often suggested that Donald Trump's statements should be taken seriously instead of word for word. Yet, subsequent events suggest that that formula could have got it backwards.

A recently unveiled U.S. National Security Strategy coupled with a series of statements from U.S. figures, Trump proxies, and Trump himself have precipitated what could be one of the most profound challenges for Atlanticism, the doctrine that has sustained stability and freedom in Europe since 1945.

From Financial Contributions to Civilizational Fear

Whereas The initial complaint centered on Europe's perceived refusal to pay for its own defense, his vision has now evolved into a significantly more disturbing outlook.

Colored by racial prejudice and a deep-seated contempt for Europe's governing bodies and elected leaders, he has spoken about the potential of societal collapse on a continent he barely knows and mostly viewed from a distance.

Although the general thrust of Trump's racial rhetoric is not new, its meaning for European security are essential to grasp.

For Trump and his adherents—including tech magnate Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the breakup of the EU—all statecraft is fundamentally a deal. But, while he once claimed was about financial fairness, the current assertion is that a declining Europe is undeserving because of its shift toward multiculturalism.

A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

During the conversation, Trump joins these dots in a form of rhetorical loop. He concedes that Russia's Vladimir Putin desires a weak Europe. Trump proclaims Europe to be weak, and by publicly highlighting the fissures in the transatlantic alliance, he inadvertently aids Putin by actively undermining European unity—while simultaneously denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is playing out at perhaps the most critical juncture for Europe in decades, amid a brutal conflict in Ukraine and rising Russian-hostile actions across the continent.

As European nations cleaves ever tighter to Kyiv amid continuing warnings of American abandonment, the danger is that Trump has constructed a justifying narrative for ignoring European leaders.

The European Response

This situation demands a firm reaction from European leadership. While some figures, including Germany's leader, have been forceful in their rebuttals, others—like the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer—have opted for a strategy of seeking to placate the White House.

On Tuesday, a Downing Street spokesperson declined to push back on the president's remarks about Europe or his renewed attack on the mayor of London.

They said, "He has a productive partnership with the U.S. president and a strong relationship with the Mayor of London, and is focused on working with both to achieve better outcomes for the people."

The stark reality is that Trump means his words and repeats what he means consistently. The time has come to abandon the pretense that things are different.
