Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

This news arrives just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as a number of outfits for her US tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world laments the passing to a true visionary whose legacy on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
