What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
