Strong winter gusts brought walls down upon flimsy shelters sheltering Palestinians uprooted by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least 4 individuals. These deaths highlights the dangerous situation that persist after over two years of intense airstrikes and severe shortages of aid.

Truce Provides No Relief from Severe Weather

While a ceasefire has been active from last fall, aid groups state that residents do not have the sufficient shelter necessary to withstand frequent winter storms.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which received the victims, reported on this week that the dead were a pair of adult females, a young female, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the local health authority announced on the same day that a 12-month-old infant died of hypothermia overnight.

"International actors has enabled us to witness death in all its forms," stated Bassel Hamouda following the funeral. "It’s true the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Shelter Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, three people of a one household — elderly Mohamed Hamouda, his 15-year-old relative, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an 26-foot high wall collapsed onto their tent in a coastal area of Gaza City. No fewer than five others were hurt in the event.

Their relatives on that day began clearing the rubble that had buried their family and reconstructing the tent shelters for those who remained.

Aid Distribution and Ongoing Crisis

The UN and its aid organization allies were handing out shelter kits, tarps, warm covers and clothes as well as nutrition and sanitation supplies throughout Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

Most of Palestinians live in makeshift shelters because their homes were reduced to rubble during the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations contend an insufficient amount of shelter materials are reaching Gaza under the truce.

Fatality Numbers After the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, which is part of the Hamas-run government, reports more than four hundred and forty people have been killed by gunfire and their bodies taken to hospitals since the truce began. The ministry keeps comprehensive fatality records that are seen as generally reliable by UN agencies and independent experts.

James Elder, spokesperson for the UN children's fund, stated on Tuesday that no fewer than one hundred minors under the age of 18 – 60 males and 40 females – had been killed since the ceasefire started because of armed actions, including unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, air raids, artillery fire and use of live ammunition. These numbers, he said, reflected incidents where enough details had been gathered to justify documentation, but the total toll is expected to be greater. He noted that many hundreds of minors had been injured.

"Although 'bombings and shootings have slowed' during the ceasefire, they have not stopped," the spokesperson told reporters at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video from Gaza City. "So what the international community now calls calm would be considered a crisis in any other place," he said.

Another Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s population of over two million people has been fighting to fend off the freezing temperatures and storms at bay while enduring lack of humanitarian aid and a lack of more substantial transitional shelter, which is urgently required throughout the colder season. It’s the third winter since the conflict between Israel and the group began on a date in late 2023, when fighters stormed into Israeli territory and murdered approximately twelve hundred people and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.

The local health authority reports more than seventy-one thousand four hundred Palestinians have been killed in the subsequent retaliatory offensive.
